Newtown Wharf Murals -- Ketchikan, Alaska.
The Newtown Wharf murals are a series of hand-painted works created along Ketchikan’s historic working waterfront—an area shaped by fishing, canneries, and everyday life tied to the ocean.
These pieces draw from vintage cannery labels, maritime signage, and Southeast Alaska coastal ecosystems. Salmon, octopus (nuu), shellfish, seabirds, and waves move through each composition, reflecting both abundance and relationship to the sea.
Typography and layout reference early packaging and dockside graphics, while the work itself is rooted in place—honoring the labor, knowledge, and culture that have defined Newtown for generations.
Painted directly within an active wharf environment, the murals live alongside boats, tides, and seafood processing. They are part of the space, not separate from it.
This series continues my exploration of ocean pathways and coastal identity—connecting contemporary waterfront life with deeper Haida relationships to land, sea, and movement across the Pacific.
