Seeing the signs. The other day in my studio, just as I was closing my window (which only opens about 4 inches) this grasshopper jumped in and landed on my glass container. He just stared at me. I stared back. Moments before I had turned off my kiln as I had ruined a few pairs of earrings by putting my kiln spatula on some of the earrings when I was trying to pull them out. It’s a technical thing. I was feeling kind of off that afternoon and was like, “Send me a sign!” Then bam! Almost instantaneously this grasshopper jumped in. I could tell that he was a wise little grasshopper by the time we spent looking at each other. Turns out that at the same time I found my grasshopper, one flew into my dads cabin up in Alaska. He hadn’t ever seen a grasshopper in Alaska.
Grasshoppers are a great omen. In the tribal lore of the Iroquois Nation, the grasshopper symbolizes good news. After I saw this little grasshopper and meditated on his meaning, I saw more inspiration on my morning walk to my studio and have come up with some really exciting new techniques. I love signs…. And I love my new totemic symbol. I am Raven Bear clan from my Haida ancestry but now I will add this guy to my spirit animals.
